Today marks year 6 of loosing my humble, gracious, loving, strong and always encouraging dad to a surprising hard attack. It is not easy, every day in the little things and in the big, I am reminded of him… his massive hugs, wise one-liners, love for my mom, belly laughs, consistent encouragement, etc. He dedicated to his life to carrying about people and their personal relationship with Lord. Although my dad was not able to witness my photography journey on earth, I know he is beyond proud watching from Heaven. He was the one who taught me how to love people and I know that is what makes me the photographer I am.
My dad wrote me many notes and this is a little excerpt from one he wrote before I headed off to college in Aug 2004.
“Moms and Dads can only give two things to their children: roots and wings. We’ve tried to give you roots into the things that really matter: Jesus Christ, God’s Word, Eternal Values, Loving Family and Friends, Staying Faithful Today and For a Lifetime. And we tried to give you wings: Growth in Grace, Desire to Develop New Skills and Abilities, Becoming All God Wants You to Be, Staying Tenacious and Motivated. Sweetheart, remember your roots and trust your wings.”
I couldn’t think of a better day to share a personal project then today. On a day, I have to force my self to be grateful for the 21 years I had with my dad. On a day, I remember the roots and wings I was given and how proud I of myself that they have manifested themselves in and through photography.
Making time and effort to do personal or inspirational shoots is becoming more and more important to me. Creativity is this word that beacons me in the night and steals my joy when I can’t express it. Not just as a photographer but as a human being, I think most people, if not all, have a natural desire CREATE. (a new recipe, a diy project, a building, a fabulous outfit, or patterns in your lawn (my husband)). This sweet little shoot is actually pigging back on a OH SO FABULOUS styled shoot that I am grateful that I was part of. That will be coming soon, but for now I hope you enjoy the sweet Keeley.
